The focus of the department is on aircraft and ground systems and their interaction supporting a safe and efficient flight mission. This includes the operational aspects of the aircraft and its systems, the human- machine interface, the air traffic management, and airport processes. Actual research addresses the evaluation of new operational flight procedures and conceptual work for safety management systems and their implementation. Also environmental aspects with regard to noise and emissions are under consideration. Recently the focus expanded towards issues of aviation security. For research projects various external full flight simulators, available through cooperation agreements, can be connected through an unique computer interface facility representing a full flight simulator computer platform. Furthermore, different in-house facilities like e.g. cockpit demonstrator, air traffic controller workstation and a distributed network of different simulation facilities could be interconnected at the department's simulation platform.
