The research aims at the design and optimization of novel control systems for atmospheric flight vehicles, space flight vehicles, and instruments. This includes system engineering issues, theoretical methods for control design, analysis and estimation, development of algorithms and verification through prototype tests and/or flight data evaluation. In the area of atmospheric flight there are two research teams working in the following fields:

  • Autonomous systems with application to flight robotics, This covers path planning using probabilistic methods and nonlinear model predictive control, camera aided navigation, and FPGA based onboard computing for MAVs (including hardware design).
  • Time-periodic systems, with application to active helicopter rotors with trailing edge flaps, including real-time implementation, flight test support and flight data evaluation.
Another major research field covers precision control systems for inertial instruments, satellite pointing, and its applications to future geodesy missions.
